Common use

Tivicay is prescribed as part of combination antiretroviral therapy for adults and adolescents with HIV-1 infection. It works by inhibiting the HIV integrase enzyme, preventing the virus from integrating its genetic material into human cells and helping lower viral load.

Dosage and direction

Tivicay is taken once or twice daily, with or without food, depending on your treatment regimen and other medications you may be using. Tablets should be swallowed whole. Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions exactly.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, hepatitis B or C, kidney problems, mental health disorders, or if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Tivicay may cause weight gain or changes in blood sugar and liver enzymes. Avoid taking magnesium, aluminum, or calcium supplements close to your dose unless directed.

Contraindications

Do not use Tivicay if you have a known allergy to dolutegravir. It is contraindicated in patients taking dofetilide due to the risk of serious cardiac side effects.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include insomnia, headache, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, liver problems, depression, or suicidal thoughts (especially in patients with a history of mental illness). Seek medical attention if severe symptoms appear.

Drug interaction

Tivicay may interact with antacids, iron or calcium supplements, rifampicin, carbamazepine, metformin, St. John’s Wort, and certain HIV medications. Some interactions may reduce effectiveness, so tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at once.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, headache, or more serious reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Tivicay at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat, and light. Keep it in its original container and out of reach of children.
